CD Projekt Red are ramping up production for The Witcher 4

The Witcher “Polaris” is now CD Projekt Red’s main project

Last year, CD Projekt Red revealed their plans to create a new The Witcher trilogy. This confirmed that The Witcher 4 was in the works under the name “Project Polaris”. Now, CD Projekt Red have confirmed that most of their staff are now working on Polaris. The development of The Witcher 4 is ramping!

The Witcher “Polaris” will be a new story-driven open-world RPG. The game will be build on the legacy of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red are building the game using Unreal Engine 5, abandoning their custom REDengine. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is CD Projekt Red’s last REDengine project.

Now that Cyberpunk 2077’s development is coming to a close, CD Projekt Red are now allocating their staff to new projects. Most staff are now moving from Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion to The Witcher “Polaris”. Sadly, CD Projekt Red has not revealed when they plan to release their next The Witcher game.

Polaris will be CD Projekt Red’s 4th The Witcher game, but the game is unlikely to be called The Witcher 4. The game will be the start of a new trilogy. This means that the game will likely feature new characters and not feature Geralt of Rivia as its protagonist. Within 6 years of Polaris’ launch, CD Projekt Red plans to deliver all three of The Witcher’s new trilogy.

Expect a long wait before The Witcher 4 launches

While I would like to see a new The Witcher game sooner rather than later, it will likely be years before CD Projekt Red are ready to launch their next The Witcher game. Moving to Unreal Engine 5 will likely be a difficult transition for CD Projekt Red. While it should save time and money in the long run, the initial transition will be a difficult one. The Witcher Polaris has no release date, and CD Projekt Red will be working hard to avoid the launch issues of Cyberpunk 2077 with their next RPG release.
