Sony’s PS5 Next System Update will enable M.2 SSD Expansion and more this week

Sony’s September System Software Update will be released Tomorrow!

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is getting its second major firmware update, delivering to the system a variety of new features, multiple usability enhancements and official support for M.2 storage expansion. 
  
One of the headline features of Sony’s firmware update is its support for 3D audio through TV speakers, which uses the microphone within the company’s DualSense controller to create optimised 3D audio settings for your gaming environment. This feature “transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.”

This firmware update also allows gamers to customise the PS5’s user interface and UX update, which will help to make the system easier to use and allow gamers to alter it to suit their needs/preferences. PlayStation Now users will also get support for a new resolution selection option, which will allow PlayStation Now users to select 720p or 1080p (if available for the streamed game) resolutions to accommodate the user’s preference. A streaming connection test has also been added to allow users to test their networks. 

 

    Tomorrow, we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also features M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables PS5 players to store and play PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps directly from the expanded high-speed storage.

We’re also expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play over mobile networks starting tomorrow, and the ability to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App beginning next Thursday, Sept. 23.

M.2 Storage Expansion

Sony’s September Software Update will officially add support for M.2 storage expansion to PlayStation 5. The video below showcases Sony’s SSD installation process, and PlayStation users should make sure that their chosen M.2 SSD meets Sony’s hardware requirements before installing it into the system. 

PS5-compatible M.2 (2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110) SSDs should be 250GB-4TB in size, use the PCIe 4.0 interface, deliver sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or higher, and be used with a heatsink. More detailed storage requirements are available here. 

Below is a list of PS5 compatible SSDs, some of which must be used with a 3rd party heatsink.

– Corsair MP600 PRO XT (Requires 3rd party Heatsink)

– Western Digital WD_Black SN850 1TB (Available with or without a heatsink) 
(Regarding the WD_Black SN850, it is available without a heatsink on Amazon for £145, making it cheaper to buy your own 3rd party heatsink)

– Samsung 980 Pro (Requires 3rd party Heatsink) 

– Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus (Required 3rd party Heatsink) 

– Crucial P5 Plus (Requires 3rd Party Heatsink)

– Gigabyte Aorus 7000S SSD (included Supported Heatsink)

– Seagate FireCuda 530 (Can Ship With or Without Supported Heatsink)

With this new update, Sony has also laid the groundwork for changes to the company’s PlayStation Remote Play application, which will allow gamers to play their PS4 and PS5 consoles remotely using WiFi or mobile data. Users of this feature will be able to select the streaming quality of the service to control the application’s data usage.
