High-speed PCIe 4.0 SSDs are now more affordable than ever

High-speed PCIe 4.0 SSDs are becoming increasingly affordable, so much so that Samsung’s 980 Pro SSD, which was available for over £200 at launch, is now available from multiple UK retailers for less than £135.

When searching for storage deals, we found that Samsung’s 980 Pro SSD is now the most affordable 1TB 7,000 MB/s PCIe 4.0 SSD that’s currently on the market. Currently, 1TB capacity drives offer the best value within the NVMe space, which higher and lower capacity drives typically costing more per GB of storage within this speed category.

Samsung confirmed yesterday that their 980 Pro SSD is PlayStation 5 compatible when used with a suitable heatsink. Today’s price change makes Samsung’s 980 Pro SSD one of the best value PS5 expansion options that are available today, even after purchasing a compatible 3rd party SSD heatsink.

With both Intel and AMD offering consumers PCIe 4.0 connectivity on their latest CPU platforms, demand for high-speed NVMe storage is higher than ever. Moving forward, demand for NVMe storage devices will continue to rise as games and other software start to utilise the speeds offered by the medium. Remember, Microsoft’s upcoming DirectStorage API is designed to be used with NVMe SSDs (more information here), and that means that PC gamers will soon need to invest in NVMe SSDs to enjoy the latest AAA titles.

With pricing this low, Samsung’s 980 Pro SSD represents exceptionally good value for those who need high-end NVMe storage. When we reviewed this SSD back in 2020 (link here), we were impressed. With today’s pricing, were are excited! Samsung is placing downward pricing pressures on all NVMe SSDs, and this is great news for PC builders worldwide.
