AUO Optronics reveals an 85-inch 4K 240Hz Display

AU Optronics’ latest display has the specs of a 4K gaming champion

4K 120Hz support is now commonplace on high-end 4K TVs, with many also delivering support for Variable Refresh Rates, HDR and more. Display technology is advancing at a rapid pace, so it shouldn’t surprise you to know that AU Optronics (AUO) has created a new large-format television screen that has the specifications of a gaming champion.

With an 85-inch screen size and a 4K resolution, AUO’s latest screen is already built to impress. What makes this new panel newsworthy is its reported support for 240Hz refresh rates, doubling the maximum refresh rate of today’s highest-end 4K TVs. Add onto this the screen’s HDR support and 96% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space, and gamers can be sure that this screen will deliver both pleasing visuals and ultra-high refresh rates.

AUO has also integrated a new anti-reflective coating onto this new screen type, reducing panel glare by giving the screen low levels of reflectivity. This technology will make this screen more suitable for bright rooms and give users a more pleasing visual experience.

Aside from this screen’s previously revealed specifications, little is known about this massive 85-inch screen from AUO. With 4K 240Hz support, this screen is too fast to operate using DisplayPort 1.4, requiring DisplayPort 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 with Display Stream Compression (DSC) to operate at its highest refresh rate without Chroma subsampling. It is also unknown if this screen will support variable refresh rate technologies. That said, there is little reason to believe that this screen will not support VRR.

Right now, we can only guess how much this high refresh rate 4K monitor will cost when it launches. All we know is that this screen will drive demand for higher-end graphics cards and help to push 4K 120Hz as a more mainstream display standard.

AU Optronics has reportedly won the 2021 Ministry of Science and Technology Central Science Park Fine Manufacturer Innovation Product Award for its new 4K 240Hz display technology.
