Windows 11’s Ryzen-fixing patches will arrive next week

Last week, AMD confirmed that Windows 11 users were achieving sub-optimal performance levels with compatible Ryzen series processors. These performance degradations were pinned on two bugs, an L3 Cache latency bug, and a CPPC issue that impacted AMD’s “preferred core” scheduler.

AMD has previously confirmed that updates that address these issues will be launched in October, but now it has been confirmed that patches for both issues will be released next week, with the L3 Cache and CPPC bug patches arriving on October 19th and October 21st respectively.

AMD’s L3 Cache Bug

Memory performance is a critical aspect of modern processors, be it their built-in caches or connected DRAM. When running specific applications under Windows 11, AMD’s Ryzen processors can exhibit L3 cache latencies that are up to three times longer, giving users a 3-5% performance drop in many applications and larger performance drops of 10-15% in latency-sensitive applications.

Addressing this issue will give Ryzen users the performance that they expect across most workloads. The largest impact of this patch will be seen in gaming workloads, as this is where L3 cache performance has a large impact.

CPPC Bug

AMD’s newer processors have a “preferred core” scheduling system, with defined CPU cores featuring higher levels of single-threaded performance levels than others. These CPU cores can achieve the highest clock speeds, and if workloads are scheduled correctly, these cores can deliver users higher performance levels.

This bug is of little consequence when compared to Ryzen’s Windows 11 cache issues, but addressing it will help AMD to deliver optimal performance levels with Windows 11.
