Nvidia officially reveals the specifications of their RTX 2060 12 GB GPU

Nvidia’s got a new RTX 2060 model, and it promises gamers more performance and more memory

Nvidia’s has officially revealed their RTX 2060 12 GB graphics card, a new RTX 2060 model that is designed to help tackle today’s GPU shortage.

While Nvidia’s RTX 2060 is a last-generation product, it supports all major current-generation features, such hardware accelerated ray tracing, mesh shaders, DirectStorage, Variable Rate Shading, and other DirectX 12 Ultimate requirements. Beyond that, the RTX 2060 also supports Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology.

Nvidia’s being quiet about this launch, and that is because re-launching a product from 2018 is not something to be proud of. That said, this is a necessary step for Nvidia. Something needs to be done to tackle the world’s GPU shortage, and this revamped RTX 2060 may be exactly what the world needs.

More Performance, More Memory

Nvidia’s new RTX 2060 12 GB graphics card is more powerful than its 6 GB predecessor. Not only does it feature more memory, it also features a higher power limit and more CUDA cores.

In total, Nvidia’s RTX 2060 12 GB has 256 more CUDA cores, an increase of around 13.3% over a standard RTX 2060. On top of that, the graphics card also has a higher base clock speed, which could help give the RTX 2060 even larger performance gains.

With 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, Nvidia’s RTX 2060 12 GB is also less likely to oversubscribe its allotted VRAM. This can prevent performance from tanking during memory heavy workloads. Even so, the RTX 2060 12 GB’s memory bandwidth is the same as a standard RTX 2060. This could be a limiting factor in some workloads.

An upgraded RTX 2060, or a nerfed RTX 2060 SUPER

Hardened hardware enthusiasts will know that the RTX 2060 12 GB has the same GPU core specifications as Nvidia’s RTX 2060 SUPER graphics card. That said, the RTX 2060 SUPER features 8 GB of GDDR6 memory over a 256-bit memory bus, giving it less memory than the RTX 2060 12 GB and more memory bandwidth.

When compared to the RTX 2060 SUPER, the RTX 2060 12 GB has 50% more memory capacity and 33.3% less memory bandwidth. This will make Nvidia’s 12 GB RTX 2060 weaker than an RTX 2060 SUPER in some applications.
