AMD’s giving Threadripper a Zen 3 Boost in 2022

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper CPU lineup is in a strange position, being simultaneously outdated while also being the market’s best-in-class HEDT and workstation processors for many workloads. AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper series is still using Zen 2 silicon, and Zen 3 processors have now been with us for over a year within the desktop and laptop CPU markets. Threadripper needs a Zen 3 update, and it looks like AMD will be giving it to us at CES 2022.

AMD is reportedly planning to launch their Ryzen 5000 series Threadripper PRO processors on March 8th, 2022. The series’ is set to be unveiled at CES 2022, showcasing the capabilities of AMD’s fastest workstation processors. That said, it remains to be seen whether AMD will launch Threadripper non-PRO processors for their TRX40 series motherboards.

According to Videocardz, AMD plans to reveal five Threadripper PRO series processors. Recent rumours have suggested that there will be 12-core, 16-core, 24-core, 32-core, and 64-core models. At this time, the exact specifications of these processors are unknown.

Right now, it is unknown whether any of AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper parts will feature AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. This technology allows AMD to increase the L3 cache of their 8-core Zen 3 chiplets from 32 MB to 96 MB. This significantly increased the L3 Cache capacity and bandwidth of AMD’s Ryzen processors, which can result in monstrous performance gains in specific workloads. That said, V-Cache is not hugely beneficial to all workloads, giving the upgrade limited appeal to many of AMD’s customers.

For desktop users, V-Cache promises significant boosts to game performance, a workload that has limited appeal to workstation customers. That said, V-Cache would be hugely beneficial for some workloads.
