AMD's reportedly bringing FSR-like upscaling to all games through Radeon Super Resolution

Radeon Super Resolution should bring FSR-like upscaling to almost all PC games

According to Videocardz, AMD’s working on a driver-level implementation of their FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 1.0) technology that can be used with almost all PC games. This new feature is called Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), and if your game supports exclusive fullscreen, it should support this new feature.

In essence, AMD’s applying their FSR 1.0 algorithm through their Radeon Software suite to upscale games to higher resolutions. This allows users of AMD graphics cards to benefit from AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution technology without relying on developers to implement the feature within their games. While a proper game-level integration of FSR is preferable, RSR will bring support for AMD’s FSR 1.0 algorithm to practically all modern PC games, which is great news for AMD.

Why FSR integration should be preferable to RSR

When integrating FSR into their games, developers can choose where within their rendering pipeline to integrate the feature. Typically, this is before their game’s UI is rendered (so it can later be rendered at your screen’s native resolution), and before effects like chromatic aberration, film grain, or other post-processing effects are added. This allows FSR to have operate more effectively.

With RDR, AMD’s driver-level integration of FSR will likely be working with finalised frames from games. This means that FSR will be used after post-processing effects are used. This could lead to sub-optimal results for some games. AMD's reportedly bringing FSR-like upscaling to all games through Radeon Super Resolution

Which GPU will support RSR?

According to Videocardz, Radeon Super Resolution will be supported by AMD’s RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 architectures. Right now, it is unknown if AMD’s older GPUs will support RSR, or if AMD plans to support RSR on older Radeon graphics solutions with future Radeon Software upgrades. We should learn more when AMD reveals this leaked feature in January 2022.
