Here’s an up close look at Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti GPU

Thanks to MEGAsizeGPU on Twitter, we have gotten a look at the GPU core behind Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 4070 Ti, or to put it another way, the GPU core behind Nvidia’s ‘unlaunced’ RTX 4080 12GB. This GPU core is AD104, and it is less than half the size of the AD102 core that Nvidia’s RTX 4090 is based on. 

With a GPU core that is less than half the size of AD102, it can be assumed that the silicon manufacturing costs for Nvidia’s AD104 based graphics cards are significantly lower than for Nvidia’s AD102 base RTX 4090. Smaller die sizes allow for greater area utilisation of silicon wafers and lowers the impact that wafer defects have on silicon yields, making smaller chips cheaper to produce than larger ones. This factor is the primary reason why many companies have invested in multi-die chip designs in recent years, as it is cheaper to produce multiple smaller chips than it is to create larger monolithic products.

Nvidia’s AD104 GPU core reportedly has up to 60 SMs (Streaming Multiprocessors), giving Nvidia’s AD104 based GPUs a maximum of 7680 CUDA cores, 240 Tensor Cores, an 60 RT (Ray Tracing) cores. This core is also known to have a 192-bit memory bus, which means that consumer-grade RTX products using this silicon will support up to 12GB of GDDR6X memory. Like Nvidia’s other Ada-based GPU designs, AD104 is manufactured using TSMC’s 4N lithography node.

Nvidia is expected to reveal their first AD104 based graphics card at CES 2023. This graphics card is Nvidia’s rumoured RTX 4070 Ti graphics card, the GPU that replaced Nvidia’s “unlaunched” RTX 4080 12GB. At CES, Nvidia is also expected to reveal RTX 40 series mobile GPUs.
