AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is now AMD’s best-selling processor, and demand is outstripping supply

AMD’s increasing Ryzen 7 5800X3D prices in response to high demand

Thanks to new information from a trusted industry contact, we now know that AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is now AMD’s best selling processor, outselling AMD’s newer Ryzen 7000 series models. 

According to our source, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is outselling all other processors at some retailers, even outselling Intel’s latest processor. These high sales have made demand outstrip supply, forcing AMD to increase the price of their V-Cache enhanced processor, at least in effect.

Recently, AMD has been supporting sales for their Ryzen 7 5800X3D and other Ryzen 5000 series processors at retailers, allowing retailers to lower the pricing of their stock of AM4 processors. This support results in discounted pricing for consumers, and in an email that was sent earlier today, our industry contact has confirmed that AMD has removed this support from their Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor. This removed support from AMD will drive Ryzen 7 5800X3D prices by an estimated £25-30 in the UK.  

To put things into simply, with demand outstripping supply, AMD no longer needs to support lower Ryzen 7 5800X3D prices to encourage new processor sales. In today’s CPU market, AMD’s V-Cache enhanced Ryzen 7 5800X3D sells itself, and it doesn’t need a discount to achieve this. As a result of this, most UK retailers will be increasing the price of their Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors today. This will make most Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors available for between £360 and £370 in the UK. So far, we have seen Scan and Ebuyer respond to AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D price increase, and more retailers will soon follow.

V-Cache’s gaming benefits and high AM5 costs are allowing the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to sell faster than AMD’s newer processors

With AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D outselling AMD’s newer Zen 4 based Ryzen 7000 series processors, we must ask why AMD’s AM4 gaming flagship is outselling the company’s newer products. The answer to this question is simple, AMD’s AM5 motherboards are too expensive. 

Even AMD’s most basic AM5 motherboards cost around or above £200, and premium models can cost well over £300. Those prices are huge when compared to older AM4 motherboards, and high DDR5 memory pricing is not helping matters. If AMD wants its Ryzen 7000 series processors to achieve stronger sales, they need to find a way to lower motherboard pricing. Lowering the platform costs of AM5 will encourage sales.

Right now, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a compelling option because AM4 motherboards can be acquired cheaply and PC builders that already own AM4 motherboards can upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D without any platform or DRAM upgrades. Right now, AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series CPUs require purchases to but a new motherboard and a new kit of DDR5 DRAM, neither of which are cheap.

For gamers, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is AMD’s most powerful AM4 processor, offering gamers the benefits of AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and the benefits of AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, which gives AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D a L3 cache that is three times larger than normal, allowing the CPU to accelerate many memory-limited gaming workloads.

For games like Factorio and Stellaris, AMD’s V-Cache technology is a game-changer, and can make AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D more powerful than AMD’s Zen 4 Ryzen 7 7700X. That said, AMD does have plans to release new V-Cache enhanced Zen 4 processors next year.
