RDNA 3 comes to laptops - AMD reveals its RX 7000 series Mobile GPUs

AMD reveals their first Radeon RX 7000 GPUs for laptops

At CES 2023, AMD has revealed their first RDNA 3 based mobile GPUs, all of which are due to be based on 6nm silicon. These GPUs are AMD’s Radeon RX 7600M, RX 7600M XT, RX 7600S, and Radeon RX 7700S, all of which feature similar 6nm RDNA 3 silicon.

Unlike AMD’s higher-end RDNA 3 graphics chips, AMD’s notebook RDNA 3 GPUs are not based on chiplet designs with a mixture of 6nm and 5nm silicon. These notebook chips are monolithic 6nm processors, making them less advanced than AMD’s RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX desktop GPUs in terms of lithography. Even so, AMD has boasted huge performance gains with their new RX 7000 series mobile GPUs, stating that their RX 7600M XT can beat Nvidia’s desktop-grade RTX 3060 GPUs.

Below, we can see performance charts for AMD’s RX 7600M XT graphics card, highlighting significant performance gains over Nvidia’s desktop RTX 3060 GPUs across a wide range of PC games at 1080p Max settings. This means that AMD’s RX 7600M XT mobile GPU should be able to best Nvidia’s mobile RTX 3060 silicon to an even larger degree, which is great news for AMD. Additionally, it is a good sign for the RX 7600M XT’s eventual desktop counterpart, which is shaping up to be a great low-end Radeon graphcs card.

AMD’s RX 7000 series mobile GPUs are also said to feature AV1 encode and decode capabilities, making AMD’s latest mobile GPUs well suited for video encoding and similar productivity applications.

When compared to its last-generation counterpart, the RX 6700S, AMD’s new RX 7700S can offer gamers notably more gaming performance within the thin and light notebook form factor, giving PC gamers a smoother experience.

So far, AMD has confirmed that they have partnered with multiple laptop manufacturers to create new AMD Advantage systems that feature AMD Ryzen mobile processors and Radeon RX 7000 series mobile GPUs. These systems are optimised to deliver peak performance levels from AMD’s hardware and to support the latest AMD Advantage features.

One of AMD’s upcoming AMD Advantage features is Smartshift RSR, which is an implementation of Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) that offloads the computational requirements AMD’s RSR technology to integrated graphics to free up performance within AMD’s discrete graphics chip. This effectively increases the gaming performance of AMD Advantage systems when Radeon Super Resolution upscaling is enabled, giving gamers a free performance upgrade.

At CES 2023, AMD has showcased an interesting strategy for Radeon within the mobile GPU market. With their RX 7600M XT, RX 7600M, RX 7700S, and RX 7600S, AMD has created a cost-effective product that delivers compelling performance levels and a lot of worthwhile features to laptop users.

The addition of RDNA 3 and AV1 encoding/decoding support will make AMD’s RDNA 3 mobile graphics chips a serious option for video editors, and AMD’s use of 6nm silicon will ensure that these graphics chips cheap to produce while remaining relatively power efficient. If AMD plays their cards right, these mobile GPUs will allow AMD to gobble up a lot of market share within the low-end gaming notebook market, which is great news for AMD. Let’s just hope that these GPUs are as impressive as AMD claims they are.
