Marketing fail – AMD makes their RX 7900 XT look like poor value

Poor value for money – AMD’s latest community post makes their RX 7900 XT look terrible

Marketing blunders happen, and AMD has become the newest company to make their current-generation products appear to be poor value when compared to their predecessors within their official marketing materials.

This week, AMD released a community blog post titled “Never a Better Time to Upgrade with Radeon Graphics”, a post that highlights the performance offered by AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 series GPUs. This post includes charts that compare AMD’s RX 7000 series GPUs and their RX 6000 series GPUs across six games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, The Callisto Protocol, Grand Theft Auto V, Apex Legends, Valorant, and Overwatch 2. Below, we can see AMD’s performance charts, and how close AMD’s RX 7900 XT and RX 6950 XT can be. 

When comparing AMD’s RX 7900 XT and RX 6950 XT, we can see that the RX 7900 XT is, on average, 7.1% faster than their RX 6950 XT while being 28.6% more expensive. If AMD’s RX 7900 XT were to offer the same value for money, or performance per $, as their RX 6950 XT, it would cost around $749, not $899. AMD’s own marketing has showcased how poorly prices AMD’s RX 7900 XT is. 

If we go the other direction and compare AMD’s RX 7900 XT to their RX 7900 XTX, we can see that the XTX offers users 22.2% more performance on average and costs 11.1% more. If we are to give the RX 7900 XT the same cost per FPS as the RX 7900 XTX, it would cost around $820. 

  

It gets worse at 1080p – But that’s fine

Below, AMD has showcased 1080p performance results and had added FPS/USD values to their charts, narrowing the gap between AMD’s RX 7900 XT and RX 6950 XT. This isn’t a huge deal, as most games tend to be CPU-limited at low resolutions like 1080p, but it does again showcase the poor value of AMD’s RX 7900 XT. Look at how much the FPS/dollar value drops when moving to the RX 7900 XT. That’s a huge decrease. 

As we have stated in our original review for AMD’s RX 7900 XT, AMD’s MSRP pricing for this GPU is too high. It’s pricing is too close to the RX 7900 XTX’s MSRP and its performance just isn’t good enough to justify it. AMD’s flagship should not offer gamers more performance per dollar than its second best graphics card. Even AMD’s 4K performance chart above shows that AMD’s RX 7900 XT should be between $80 and $150 cheaper to offer similar performance per dollar values as its nearest Radeon competitors.
