The Last of Us Part 1’s PC version is a disaster – Wait for patches

The Last of Us Part 1 became available on PC last night, and its launch has been a disaster. Currently, The Last of Us Part 1 has a “Mostly Negative” review rating on Steam, with players reporting crashes, stuttering, huge levels of framerate inconsistency, and other issues.

When playing the game last night, the game’s shader pre-compilation step took a long time to finish. With out Ryzen 5 5600X processor, this shader compilation step took an hour to complete, and while you can play the game before this step is finished, we wouldn’t recommend doing so.

On PC, The Last of Us Part 1 has the potential to use a lot of video memory and the game is hugely CPU-limited. There are times when this game dips below 60 FPS on our Zen 3 Ryzen processor, and even moving the game to its lowest graphical settings does little to alleviate this issue. Even with the game’s shader compilation step completed, the game stuttered at times, and framerates varied hugely depending on CPU load. At times, the game barely stayed above 60 FPS, while at others the game was at 120 FPS.

The Last of Us Part 1 PC version is a mess - Naughty Dog are prioritising updates

Naughty Dog has stated that they are currently investigating issues with The Last of Us Part 1’s PC version and has stated that they are “prioritising updates”. So far, Iron Galaxy, the company that worked with Naughty Dog on The Last of Us Part 1’s PC version, have not released a statement regarding the state of The Last of Us Part 1 on PC.

For now, we recommend that PC gamers avoid The Last of Us Part 1 on PC, at least until the game has been patched to address the game’s most glaring issues.
