Nvidia's RTX 4050 is reportedly launching in June with too little VRAM

It looks like Nvidia’s launching their RTX 4050 in June with 6GB of VRAM

It looks like Nvidia’s planning to launch an RTX 4050 graphics cards later this year, with @MEGAsizeGPU reporting on Twitter that the graphics card will be arriving in June.

Videocardz has also released an image of a reported box of a Galax RTX 4050, which was spotted at a press event for the company. Sadly, this image is unclear, and is likely an early mock up from Galax.

Rumour has it that Nvidia’s RTX 4050 will be based on Nvidia’s AD107 silicon, which is rumoured to be the silicon behind Nvidia’s RTX 4060. The RTX 4050 appears to feature a 96-bit memory bus, with recent reports claiming that the graphics card will only feature 6GB of video memory, which is not enough to play many modern games without issues.

6GB of VRAM is not enough

The past week has seen The Last of Us Part 1 and Resident Evil 4 (Remake) arrive on PC, and both of these games can utilise a lot of graphics memory, even at low 1080p resolutions. With the 8GB quickly becoming the minimum amount of memory that is advisable for 1080p gaming, Nvidia’s RTX 4050 will be poorly positioned within today’s PC market. This is especially true knowing that Nvidia’s RTX 3050 has 8GB of graphics memory.

As far back as Nvidia’s RTX 20 series, we have said that 8GB of graphics memory is not enough for modern games, and since then memory requirements for modern PC games have only gotten higher. Like the RTX 2060 6GB, we expect a 6GB RTX 4050 to age poorly, as GPU memory requirements aren’t going to get any lower. If Nvidia release an RTX 4050 with 6GB of memory, Nvidia will be releasing a compromised product.
