Redfall will be locked to 30 FPS on Xbox Series X/S at launch

Only PC gamers will be able to play Redfall at 60 FPS at launch

Arkane Studios has confirmed that their upcoming single-player/multi-player Vampire slaying open-world FPS will be locked to 30 FPS on consoles when the game launches on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, making PC the only platform that supports 60 FPS and higher framerates within the game at launch.

While a 60 FPS performance mode is planned as part of a post-launch Redfall update, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners will only be able to play the game at 4K 30 FPS and 1440p 30 FPS on day-1, and it is unclear how long it will take for the game’s performance patch to be released.

On PC, Redfall will support higher framerates, assuming that the their hardware is up to the task. At launch, Redfall will support Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology, and it is likely that the game will support other forms of high quality resolution upscaling on PC.

Console games are returning to 30 FPS

The return to 30 FPS games on consoles is inevitable, as developers are certain to push the graphical envelope further and make more extensive use of the CPU resources of modern consoles as games become more advanced. Moving from 60 FPS to 30 FPS gives developers much larger frametimes to work with, allowing them to create more complex games using today’s console hardware. While 60 FPS gameplay has its advantages, developers will inevitably move to 30 FPS to create the most advanced games possible.

As console gaming moves away from the cross-generation era where both PS4/PS5 and Xbox One and Xbox Series systems are both supported by new game releases, developers will start creating games that are current-gen exclusive, allowing them to utilise modern console hardware to its fullest and without last-generation performance constraints in mind. This move will see many developers run their games at 30 FPS on modern gaming systems, tapping into the full strength of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to create incredible games.
