Netflix's ad-supported plan will soon receive a resolution boost

Netflix’s “Basic with Ads” tier has been a huge success, and soon subscribers will receive a free resolution boost

Netflix’s “Basic with Ads” subscription tier has been a huge success for the steaming giant, with the company confirming that the plan currently generates more income per subscriber than their more costly standard subscription plan. Because of this, Netflix has decided to give “Basic with Ads” subscribers a resolution boost and the ability to stream to two devices at once, add-ons which will be rolled out to all 12 “Basic with Ads” markets this month.

With Netflix’s changes to their “Basic With Ads” service, subscribers will soon see the resolution of their streamed videos boosted from 720p to 1080p, giving subscribers a significant uplift in video quality. This change is designed to make their ad-supported subscription tier more attractive to customers.

While these changes to Netflix’s ad-supported plan are positive, the plan still lacks some features that premium subscribers have access to, such as video downloads and some content options. Currently, Netflix Basic With Ads subscribers have access to “on average ~95 percent content parity globally (by viewing)” compared to non-ad subscribers.
