AMD’s MBA Radeon RX 7600 model is incompatible with some 6+2-pin PCIe cables

AMD’s reference RX 7600 design isn’t compatible with all 6+2-pin PCIe power cables

Both TechPowerUp and Igor’s Lab have uncovered that AMD’s MBA (Made by AMD) Radeon RX 7600 is incompatible with some 6+2-pin PCIe power cables, causing some cables to either be difficult or impossible to connect to the graphics card. 

Currently, AMD’s MBA Radeon RX 7600 design is not available to purchase, either directly from AMD or from retailers, making this a non-issue for consumers, at least right now. AMD has confirmed that they will be releasing their MBA Radeon RX 7600 design in the future, though at this time it is unclear why the graphics card was not made available alongside custom designs. Currently, AMD’s MBA Radeon RX 7600 graphics card is only available to reviewers, and it is possible that the delay of this graphics card is due to this PSU cable compatibility issue. 

This PSU compatibility problem stems from the fact that not all 6+2 pin power cables are the same. Some have an additional plastic notch that can interfere with AMD’s MBA Radeon RX 7600, though it is worth noting that native 8-pin PCIe power cables and the 6+2-pin PCIe power cables from many PSU manufacturers can be connected with AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 without issue. It is also worth remembering that this issue is not present with any custom RX 7600 GPU models.

At this time it is unknown if AMD have redesigned their MBA Radeon RX 7600 models ahead of their retail launch, or if their delay has been caused by another factor. Users of incompatible 6+2-pin PCIe power cables can modify their cables to fit by simply shaving off the cable’s unnecessary notch, though doing this could have warranty implications, and AMD should have designed their latest graphics card to not have this issue.

AMD should be able to address this compatibility issue by revising the backplate design on their RX 7600 graphics cards. Hopefully this issue will be addressed before AMD’s MBA RX 7600 becomes available to purchase.
