Modder showcases DLSS 3 in The Last of Us Part 1

Modder PureDark brings DLSS 3 Frame Generation to The Last of Us Part 1

The Last of Us Part 1 is well known for being a CPU-heavy game on PC, and that fact alone makes PureDark’s DLSS 3 Frame Generation mod for the game especially interesting. Yes, modders have started adding DLSS Frame Generation to games, and it is an awesome addition to many titles.

For the uninitiated, DLSS 3 Frame Generation is Nvidia’s latest gaming-focused AI technology, using game data and unique hardware of their RTX 40 series graphics cards to create AI-generated intermediate frames that can be inserted between traditionally rendered frames. This can potentially double the framerates of games, increasing game smoothness significantly.

With The Last of Us Part 1 being a CPU-limited game, DLSS 3 Frame Generation is a technology that can increase the framerate of the game without needing extra CPU power. DLSS 3 effectively bypasses the game’s CPU-limited nature by adding AI frames that do not require additional CPU power to generate. Below, we can see The Last of Us Part 1 running at 60-70 FPS without DLSS Frame Generation, but run at framerates in excess of 100 FPS when DLSS Frame Generation is enabled.

PureDark has confirmed that they plan to release a version of their DLSS 3 mod for The Last of Us Part 1 “in the next few days”, which means that PC gamers should be able to see this mod for themselves soon. That said, it is worth remembering that Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology is only available on the company’s RTX 40 series graphics cards, which means that most gaming PCs cannot use it.
