This $4 add-on can reduce your Ryzen thermals by 3 degrees

At Computex, Noctua has showcases a new product that has been shown to be able to reduce the thermals of AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series processors by as much as three degrees. The good news is that this new product isn’t a new heatsink, it’s an upgrade that can offset the mounting of Noctua’s existing heatsinks to deliver more optimal cooling for AMD’s latest processors.

Next month, Noctua will be releasing new AMD AM5 offset mounts for their heatsinks, allowing users of compatible Noctua coolers to slightly lower their heatsinks to position them exactly over the thermal centers of AMD’s latest Ryzen processors. This enables improved heatsink performance and lower CPU thermals, and the best part is that the upgrade should cost under £5.

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series processors utilise a chiplet-based design, and this design places the CPU’s thermal center below the center of their CPU’s integrated heat-spreader (IHS). This means that most CPU heatsinks are not mounted optimally over these processors, a problem that Noctua’s offset mounts address.

Noctua’s new AM5 offset mount lowers the mounting position of their heatsinks by 7mm, and that offset can reduce CPU thermals by up to three degrees celcius. That’s a great result for such a cheap add-on, and a clear sign that Noctua have been thinking outside of the box to improve the thermal performance of their heatsinks.

Looking at Noctua’s offset mounts, we can see that Noctua have provided holes that also line up wit the standard mounting position for their AM5 compatible heatsinks. This allows users of Noctua’s offset mounts to choose how they mount their heatsinks, as it is possible that AMD may move the thermal center of their processors with future AM5 CPU designs. Noctua’s AM5 offset mounts are designed for AMD’s Ryzen 7000 processors, and it is possible that AMD’s next-generation 8000 series processors may require a different offset, or no offset at all to deliver ideal thermal performance.
