Need more VRAM? Modders have created a 44GB RTX 2080 Ti graphics card

Today we are looking at a special RTX 2080 Ti graphics card, a GPU that has been customised to have more VRAM than any other RTX 2080 Ti. This GPU has 44GB of VRAM, and while it cannot be used to play games, it showcases how high VRAM sizes can get if the GPU industry deemed it necessary.

This custom RTX 2080 Ti came to out attention though @wxnod on Twitter, who shared several images of the modified graphics card and a GPU- screenshot for the GPU. This RTX 2080 Ti model has had its 1GB GDDR6 memory modules swapped out for 2GB models, and has also had additional 2GB GDDR6 memory modules attached to the rear of this GPU’s PCB. This is what has allowed the VRAM of this GPU to be doubled and then doubled again compared to standard 11GB RTX 2080 Ti GPUs.

Adding 44GB of GDDR6 memory to an RTX 2080 Ti is a crazy achievement, and while this graphics card is not stable when used for gaming workloads, it proves that GMU manufacturers could create GPUs with larger GDDR6 frame buffers if they wanted to. While 2GB GDDR6 modules are now common on most modern graphics cards, not many consumer-grade graphics cards attach these modules to both sides of a GPU’s PCB to make the most out of their limited memory bus sizes.

Nvidia’s 16GB RTX 4060 Ti graphics card will be built in a similar manner to this modded RTX 2080 Ti, using 2GB GDDR6 memory modules on both sides of the graphics card to offer users 16GB of VRAM over the graphics card’s small 128-bit memory bus. While adding additional VRAM in this way has both consequences for both thermal design and GPU power draw, it does give PC builders a large frame buffer to exploit, which is a good thing for both games and creator workloads. The downside of this however is that this technique does not add more available memory bandwidth to graphics cards.

To make this custom 44GB RTX 2080 Ti usable for playing games, it is probable that this GPU would need a custom BIOS, a custom power profile and potentially a custom driver to become usable. Nvidia did not intend for a 44GB RTX 2080 Ti to exist, and while this GPU is an interesting proof of concept, it is not longer a usable piece of hardware.
