Massive Nvidia RTX 40 Series Heatsink Design Leaks - An RTX 4090 Ti or Titan Cooler

Colossal Nvidia RTX 40 series cooler design re-appears – Is this the RTX Titan Ada’s heatsink?

Images of a huge Nvidia heatsink have made their way onto the web, showcasing what appears to be an RTX 4090 series prototype design that features a 4-slot heatsink design and an  unorthodox PCB design.

Previously, this heatsink design was rumoured to be for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 Ti or a new RTX TITAN series graphics card, but now it seems clear that this heatsink design was for a prototype RTX 4090, though it could potentially be used for an RTX 4090 Ti or TITAN series GPU in the future.

What’s strange about this heatsink design is not is sheer size. This heatsink appears to connect to a graphics card PCB that is tilted 90 degrees from a PC’s PCIe slot. This creates an ultra-thick GPU design that features a heatsink that is more like a CPU tower heatsink than a traditional GPU heatspreader. With this design, air can flow through the graphics card and does not need to move around a GPU’s PCB.

If Nvidia were to create an RTX 40 series GPU design that has a higher TDP than their 450W RTX 4090, Nvidia could need a heatsink like this to cool it effectively. That said, a heatsink this huge would be expensive, and the complex nature of this GPU’s PCB would add additional manufacturing costs.

The heatsink shown in this article is clearly marked as an RTX 4090, which makes it likely that this heatsink design was for an RTX 4090 prototype, not a planned RTX TITAN or RTX 4090 Ti. That said, Nvidia can revisit this design when building future graphics cards.

Nvidia has clearly considered a lot of strange and unusual heatsink designs when creating their RTX 4090, and the company’s design teams need to be commended for that. It wasn’t long ago that all reference Nvidia or Radeon graphics cards had basic heatsink designs with load blower fans, and Nvidia’s push for something better with their RTX Founders Edition graphics cards has been a hugely positive thing for the GPU market, at least in terms of heatsink design.

Will we see this new RTX 40 series heatsink come to market in the form of an RTX 4090 Ti or RTX TITAN? Who knows… Maybe this design will be revisited with Nvidia’s next-generation RTX 50 series, or never be used for a consumer GPU.
