Threads won’t feature ads until the app is on the road to one billion users

In case you were unaware, Meta’s new Threads app has launched on iOS and Android, offering users an alternative to Twitter that’s created by the team behind Instagram.

Currently, Threads lacks a lot of features, lacking hashtags, a following feed, and ads. Yes, Meta’s newest social media platform lacks ads, and it has been confirmed that Threads will remain ad-free until the app is on the road to 1 billion users. For context, reaching 1 billion users would make Threads larger than Twitter.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has confirmed that implementing ads is not a priority for their Threads team. Mosseri wants to make an app that users want to keep using before thinking about monetisation. Threads needs a strong userbase before it gets monetised.

Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Instagram’s parent company Meta, has stated that Threads needs to be “on a clear path to 1 billion people” before the app becomes monetised. Meta’s approach to Threads monetisation makes sense, Threads needs to be a place that features worthwhile content before it becomes a platform that features adverts. For now, Threads will remain ad free, but once it becomes popular enough, you can be sure that Threads’ overlords at Meta will want a return on their investment.

Within the first seven hours of the operation, Threads has already had over 10 million users sign up. Over the coming days, you can expect millions more to sign up for the new social media platform. For now, Threads is not available in the EU, but once it is we can expect the app’s popularity to explode.

Threads has already proven to be a huge success for Meta, but it remains to be seen if the platform has what it takes to surpass Twitter that get on the road to 1 billion users.
