Splave sets a new overclocking record with their ROG RTX 4090 Matrix graphics card

Ever since the launch of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090, overclockers have been trying to push graphics cards to clock speeds beyond 4GHz, a legendary feat by overclocking standards.

In recent years, GPU clock speeds have increased significantly, so much so that pushing GPUs past 2GHz is now expected, and reaching boost clock speeds of beyond 3 GHz is not out of reach for most overclockers with suitable hardware. Until now, 4GHz was uncharted territory, having never been achieved before by any graphics card, Now, the overclocker Splave has pushed past this boundary an ASUS ROG RTX 4090 Matrix graphics card, achieving a 4,005 MHz overclock.

This new record overclock was achieved by Splave using liquid nitrogen cooling, which was able to keep GPU temperatures at a nice and cool negative 34.6 degrees Celsius. This overclock required insane amounts of power and cooling to achieve, and while Splave has not revealed how much power his RTX 4090 consumed during his overclocking tests, similar tests have often saw graphics cards draw over 1,000 watts of power.

While this overclock was not utilise to run any games or 3D tests, pushing the world’s first graphics card past 4 GHz is a huge feat, and Splave should be proud of that achievement.

Now, the question is how long will it take for a graphics card to run at 4 GHz out of the box? Every new graphics card launch comes with a notable increase in GPU clock speeds, making it only a matter of time before AMD, Nvidia, or Intel create a GPU that can run at 4 GHz out of the box. When that target is reached, we can expect overclockers to be passing new GHz barriers, pushing the bar higher for future hardware.
