Portal Prelude RTX is now available to download for free on Steam

Valve’s Portal is a classic, and while there are only two official games, a look into the modding scene will find you a wealth of content, both for Portal 1 and Portal 2. One of Portal’s most famed mods is Portal Prelude, a unofficial prequel to Portal that features a lengthy 8-10 hour campaign with challenging new test chambers, new gameplay mechanics, and full voice acting. Now, Nvidia has remastered Portal Prelude with RTX Remix to create Portal Prelude RTX.

Nvidia has recreated Portal Prelude with full ray tracing (path tracing), DLSS 3 support, and RTX IO support. The mod has also been recreated with enhanced materials, which when combined with ray tracing makes Portal look better than ever.

Like Portal with RTX, Portal Prelude RTX is available for free on Steam and simply requires a copy of Portal to become playable. This is an Nvidia RTX showcase that highlights the ray tracing capabilities of RTX 40 series graphics cards, and the benefits of their DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation technologies. Don’t expect this mod to run well on AMD or Intel graphics hardware.

With its RTX visual enhancements, Portal Prelude RTX is now the definitive way to play the award winning mod. That said, you will need a powerful graphics card for this mod to run well on your system, as you can see based on the mod’s hardware requirements below.

As you can seem Nvidia lists an RTX 3080 graphics card with DLSS as being capable of running Portal Prelude RTX at 1080p 60 FPS. That’s a low target resolution for a graphics card like Nvidia’s RTX 3080, though these hardware requirements do make sense considering that this RTX Remix is intended to showcase the benefits of Nvidia’s RTX 40 series exclusive DLSS 3 Frame Generation technology.
